James Buel Garvin, age 74, of Altus, passed away Friday afternoon, July 14, 2017, at his residence in Altus.
Mr. Garvin was born in Altus, Oklahoma, on October 1, 1942, to Buel and Dorothy Evelyn (Preston) Garvin. After attending Altus Public Schools, James graduated from Altus High in 1960 and went on to Oklahoma State University for a short time before joining the United States Navy during the Viet Nam War. Based out of San Diego, James served his country as a skilled avionics electrical technician for Navy aircraft. After an honorable discharge, James made California his home, working in Civil Service before moving to Silicon Valley to work in Information Technology.
In the mid 1990’s, James returned to Altus, where he reconnected to his Oklahoma roots and cared for his aging parents. In his spare time, James especially enjoyed following college and professional football and hunting quail, as well as observing and recording the cycles of nature in and around Lake Altus.
Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by one brother, Harold Garvin of Montgomery, Texas, and two sisters, Sue Haley of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jo Anne Nusbaum of Casa Grande, Arizona, along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Memorial services for James Garvin will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 20, 2017, at the Centennial Chapel, Altus City Cemetery, with Rev. Erin Martinez officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, of Altus.
