John Melvin, age 77 of Altus, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.
John was born in Temple, Texas on February 6, 1940 to his parents Alton Melvin and Macie (Douglas) Melvin. Growing up in the Temple, Texas area John graduated from the Little River Academy High School and shortly after he enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. John served his country for over twenty years in the Air Force achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. In the early 70’s John landed in Altus where he was stationed at Altus Air Force Base and retired from the Air Force with an honorable discharge receiving numerous awards and decorations including; the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Force Air Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Medal. After the Air Force John worked for the City of Altus as an Animal Control Officer until he retired in 1999. He was a longtime member of the Southside Baptist Church in Altus where he taught Sunday School and was director of Sunday School, AWANA’s, sang in the choir, worked with the youth group, and went on mission trips. For many years he was active with the Altus Twirlers Square Dancing group. John enjoyed ranching on his farm, learning new things like playing the piano and learning Spanish. John’s most famous quote was “You’re good lookin and God loves you”.
Preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Curtis William, Jack, Billy Joe, and Aubrey Melvin; and his sister, Geneva Kastner; John is survived by three sons, David Melvin and wife Jorene of Bethany, Oklahoma; Nathan Urbina and wife Rebecca of Altus; and Justin Urbina and wife Krystle of Yukon, Oklahoma; four daughters, Terry Moore and husband Jim of Missouri; D’Anna Weidman and husband Michael of Texas; Julie Strickland and husband Brian of Altus; and Krista Getgen and husband Jeff of New York; two brothers, Elnor Melvin and wife Joyce of Texas; and Kenneth Melvin of Texas; sixteen grandchildren, Anthony and Lyndsay; MaKayla and Kaeden; Justin, Berlyn, and Shiloh; Kathaleen, Stephen, and James; Maverick; Kylee, Kale, and Caleb; Elyse and Lauren; two great grandchildren, Daniel and Kurt; special friend, Tina Martinez of Altus; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
The family will greet friends at visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2017 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery Veterans Section with Military Honors rendered by the United States Air Force, Altus Air Force Base.
