Jerry Thomas Cooley, age 82, of Altus, passed away late Friday evening, May 12, 2017, at English Village Manor, in Altus.
Mr. Cooley was born in Wilburton, Oklahoma on February 12, 1935, to James Russel and Edna Lena (Wofford) Cooley. Jerry began school in Wilburton and moved to Hollis, Oklahoma as a teenager and completed his schooling in Hollis. In April 1952, Jerry joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country until being honorably discharged in 1954. For many years Jerry worked the night shift, as a security guard, in Florida. In 1997, he moved to southwest Oklahoma where he was a night security guard at Republic Gypsum and the Cotton Compress until his health began to decline. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed reading about history, especially books by Bill O’Reilly, dealing with Patton and the war, along with spending time at Friendship Inn, drinking coffee and solving the world’s problems with his good friend, Warren Bomboy.
Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Chuck and Kenneth and three sisters, Zona, Maureen and Frances, he is survived by one son, Jerry Thomas Cooley II and wife Doree of Houston; two grandchildren, Caden and Madison; two brothers, Preston Cooley and wife Bertha of Dale, Oklahoma and Vernon Cooley and wife Cindy of Altus, Oklahoma; one sister, Linda Beller of Albuquerque, New Mexico along with many other relatives and friends.
Memorial services for Jerry Cooley will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Altom officiating. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made, in memory of Jerry Cooley, to Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
